Top 5 Reasons a Centrifugal Pump Experiences Failure

Centrifugal pumps are used for a number of daily human activities. From gas and oil production to open heart surgery, a centrifugal pump failure could turn a regular day at work into a tragedy. In order to keep productivity up at work and to keep surgeries running smoothly, it is important you have the bearings needed to prevent pump failure in the future. If you are experiencing centrifugal pump failure, it could be the result of a number of reasons, including: 

1. No liquid delivery

2. Low liquid flow rate

3. Intermittent operation

4. Low discharge pressure

5. No liquid delivery

Any of these five symptoms could be caused by possible instrument errors, lack of priming, corrosion cavitation, an empty supply tank, the presence of non-condensable liquid, a clogged inlet strainer, low speed, wrong direction of rotation, or excessive power demand.  

The solutions, just like the symptoms, vary. Before moving forward, check the pump’s instruments, try priming the pump, stop and check the impeller, check the supply source, clean the strainer if it must be done, check your power supply connection, possibly reinstall the impeller in the correct direction, and check the centrifugal pump’s temperature.

Preventing Centrifugal Pump Failure

Just like any machine, natural or man-made, centrifugal pumps must be taken care of in order to work efficiently. Without proper care, it should be no surprise that your pump will be more susceptible to failure. One of the most important ways you can care for your centrifugal pump comes down to one word: priming. 

Thick of a horse, or a lawnmower, or a car. If you were to ride a horse without giving it water to drink, try starting a lawnmower without priming it, or driving a car without checking the oil, how long would it all last? Would it even be able to move? Although impressive, multifunctional machines, centrifugal pumps still require maintenance in order to run properly. Keep it primed. Never run a pump without making sure it is primed beforehand. 

The best way to prevent pump failure really comes down to its bearings. Precisely engineered devices, they give pumps the ability to move at the speeds necessary to carry heavy loads of water or sewage with ease and efficiency.  Check your pump’s bearings at least twice a month. If any need to be replaced, it’s important that it’s done as soon as possible.
